Other Activities

For outside hours, please have a verification form filled out and placed in the service mailbox in the TBP office (Weil 278) to get credit. The form requires the name, title, signature, and phone number/email address of one of the representatives of the organization and the number of hours of service and date recorded in ink. Note that electees are required to get at least 4 of their required hours directly through TBP.

Many of the events below are also on the calendar. For all activities, make sure you sign in somewhere so that we know that you were involved.

  • Habitat for Humanity: Build houses with Alachua Habitat for Humanity (2317 SW 13th St. Gainesville, FL 32608; (352) 378-4663; http://www.alachuahabitat.org/)

    • When: Tuesday through Friday, from 9AM till 1PM.
    • How:
      1. Read the safety manual.
      2. E-mail Jannah Hancock (jhancock@alachuahabitat.org), Volunteer Coordinator, with your completed application form, and dates/times of interest.
      3. Get a confirmation from Jannah Hankock.
    • Where: Near the intersection of SE 30th Drive and SE 21st Avenue. Click here (updated 04/13) for a map. It doesn't point all the way to the location because it is still being built. Here are the directions.

      • Make sure to have a service verification form filled out to get credit (as mentioned up top).

  • TBP Blood Drive: (Does not count as a service project or towards your basic points toward being an active member.) There is always a blood shortage, especially for the rare types. So please donate! Look for bloodmobiles at:

    • Hub: 10am-5pm
    • Turlington: 9am-5pm

    Tell them that you're from TBP so that they can tally up at the end of the semester how many pints we have donated. All donors receive a recognition item and cholesterol check. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and show photo I.D. For more info, call LifeSouth at (352) 334-1000.


  • Engineering Bowl: This Jeopardy-style engineering quiz bowl will take place as part of E-Week amongst four Engineering Honor Societies at UF. We need a team of four people in various fields of engineering to represent us at this contest. The four final teams that will participate in the E-Bowl will be chosen in a preliminary round, which is a written test. If you are interested in participating, contact Adam.

    Preliminary:

    • When: Feb 8, 7pm
    • Where: NEB 202

    E-Bowl:

    • When: Feb 20, 7PM
    • Where: Reitz Union Grand Ballroom

  • E-Week Engineering and Science Fair tabling: We need volunteers to present our activity in the Engineering and Science Fair during E-Week. Kids will be making bridges with popsickle sticks and tape and testing their constructions with sand bags. If you are interested, contact Justin. You will need to sign up for various time slots that you find convenient.

    • When: Tue Feb 20, 9am-7pm, Wed Feb 21 9am-3pm
    • Where: Reitz Union Grand Ballroom

  • Take care of abandoned pets: Have kisses, snuggles, and warmth from furry friends. Some of the ways to participate are cleaning and maintaining the facility there, doing lawn work, grooming, cuddling cats, and walking dogs. New ideas are welcome. This is a simple but needed chance to spread some love.

      • You may get dirty - so wear old clothes and closed-toed shoes (like sneakers).
      • Be sure that you sign in on the Tau Beta Pi time sheet.
      • You have to sign-in when you arrive and leave so that we know when you were there.

  • Wheelchair ramp construction: We will build a 45 ft. wheelchair ramp. Gatorade and ramp specific tools are provided. This event is a great chance to see something used that your own two hands built. More information about the oraganizers is available at this website.

    • When: Sat Mar 3, 8:30am-10:30am or 8:30am-12:30pm
    • Where:
      • Meet at the Kangaroo gas station on SW 34 St. and SW 35 Pl. (map)

      • The project is located at the home of the person who needs the wheelchair ramp. The directions to her home are in the Google Calendar entry, so please check it out.
    • Notes:
      • If you arrive late, you may have to contact Andrew May via cell phone. His number is listed in the calendar entry for this event.
      • Please bring your own hammer and gloves if you can. Wear work clothes and closed-toed shoes (like sneakers).

  • Gator Engineering Outreach: We need help guiding tour groups for during the event. If you are interested, contact Alan as soon as possible. Spots are limited.

    • When: Mar 20 and 22; 11:30am-12:40pm and/or 12:40pm-1:40pm

  • Alachua County Humane Society Lucky Pets Adopt-a-thon: If you'd like to sign up for one of the shifts, e-mail Kim Huebner (kimhuebner@gmail.com).

    • When: Sat May 24 to Sun May 25, see shifts below.
    • Where: Oaks Mall behind Macy's.
    • Note:
      • You are required to wear close-toed shoes for safety reasons.
      • Arrive 10 minutes before your shift so to check in at the Humane Society tent.

Please bring the completed verification form to Andrew (Service Chair) just before this Monday's meeting.
    Shifts on Saturday March 24th:
    • 7:30AM Transport - Need people with trucks and SUVs who can help us load up our animals and supplies and transport them to the mall Saturday morning.
    • 7:30AM Dog Washers - We need people who will come help us get our puppies and messier adult dogs ready to put their best paw forward by giving them baths.
    • 8:30-11AM First Shift - Helping to unload animals and supplies and set up for the event, dog walking, handing out information, etc.
    • 11AM-2PM Second Shift - Dog walking, handing out information, etc.
    • 2-5:30PM Third Shift - Dog walking, handing out information, etc.
    • 10AM-1PM Greeter Shift One - We need two people at the entrance to greet people, take a head count of the number of people who come, and take donations.
    • 1-5PM Greeter Shift Two - We need two people at the entrance to greet people, take a head count of the number of people who come, and take donations.
    • as needed Stand-by Transport - Depending on the weather we may need to transport out animals back to ACHS so they can have a warm place to sleep for the night. We need people with trucks or SUVs who will be willing to be "on-call" for transport Saturday night.
    Shifts on Sunday March 25th:
    • as needed Stand-by Transport - If we transport our animals back Saturday night we will also need people to be "on-call" for transport Sunday morning. We would be transporting at 7:30 Sunday morning if need be.
    • 9AM-12PM First Shift - Dog walking, handing out information, etc.
    • 12PM-3PM Second Shift - Dog walking, handing out information, etc.
    • 3-5PM Third Shift - Dog walking, handing out information, helping to load animals and supplies for transport back to the Humane Society, etc.
    • 11AM-1PM Greeter Shift One - We need two people at the entrance to greet people, take a head count of the number of people who come, and take donations.
    • 1-4PM Greeter Shift Two - We need two people at the entrance to greet people, take a head count of the number of people who come, and take donations.
    • starting 3:30PM Tear Down - Taking down the fence, tables, chairs, etc. Packing up our supplies, walking dogs before transport, etc.
    • 4PM Transport - We need people with trucks and SUVs to help us transport our animals and supplies back to ACHS.
  • Family Fun Night: Come and spend quality time (chat, board games, etc.) and cheer up families with critically ill children in the area. The service opportunity is being organized by Ronald McDonald House (www.rmhgainesville.com). You can also make Easter eggs for those staying here. You are welcome to bring Easter goodies along too.   • Reconstruction: We will keep Alachua beautiful. Clean-up a neighborhood or paint a house. This is a great time outdoors. We can compete to see who has the largest bag of trash!
